Weight Management Clinic London

Weight Management

At GP London W1, we understand that everyone has their own personal struggles managing their weight. We also know that the demands of our busy lives can make it challenging to maintain weight loss results on our own.

The impact of being overweight or obese can have a significant effect on your self-esteem and body confidence but can also increase your risk of serious health concerns, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, sleep apnoea, and more.

Our private GPs offer medically monitored weight loss medication to our registered patients, as well as lifestyle advice and comprehensive management of any associated medical conditions.

Mounjaro and Wegovy are weight loss drugs, injected weekly, which suppress the appetite and slow down the rate at which food leaves your stomach, so you feel fuller for longer.

Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide. This active ingredient targets the hormonal pathways that regulate appetite and balance energy by mimicking the action of GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1). Mounjaro aids in weight loss but also helps to stabilise blood sugar, making it effective for patients with type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes.

Wegovy is the brand name for the active ingredient semaglutide and was initially developed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. It is proven to reduce weight by utilising the GLP-1 receptors that regulate appetite, hunger pangs and the desire for high-fat foods.

Both medications are introduced at a lower dosage and increased until a maintenance dose is established. It is possible to switch medications if you’re not seeing the results you’re hoping for.

Wegovy and Mounjaro are designed to support weight loss when combined with a balanced, calorie-reduced diet and increased regular physical activity.

Frequently Asked Questions

At GP London W1, we generally follow NICE recommendations, prescribing this medication for patients with a BMI over 30 or 27 with an associated weight-related health condition such as hypertension or pre-diabetes.

Generally, only a few medical conditions preclude you from being safely prescribed weight loss medication. We can assess this at the consultation.

You should not take weight loss medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning on conceiving soon.

To be prescribed weight loss medication, patients must be registered with GP London W1 and require ongoing monitoring and support. To commence treatment, registered patients would need a routine consult, or new patients would need to undergo a new patient consultation appointment.

In terms of follow-up assessment, we would typically have a phone review every month as the dosage increases to check on weight loss and whether you’re experiencing any potential side effects. Once the dosage is stabilised, we will typically have a face-to-face appointment at three-month intervals.

These medications start working within 24 hours, so patients typically notice some effects within the first week. Patients begin on a low dose to reduce the risk of any side effects, and then we gradually increase the dosage over the following months to find a suitable maintenance level.

The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain and constipation. However, most patients tolerate them very well, and any side effects settle within a couple of weeks.

More severe side effects can include inflammation of your pancreas, changes in vision, low blood sugar in diabetes patients, and kidney or gallbladder problems.
