Dr Justine Setchell at GP at London

Dr Justine Setchell

MBBS MRCGP DRCOG DOCCMED

I’m Dr Justine Setchell, one of the partners of GP London W1. I once heard GPs described as navigators, and I thought that was an apt description of what we do. We build relationships with our patients, so we can help them navigate choppy waters if something does crop up.

I enjoy the executive medical service we provide. You’d think it would be very routine, but it offers an opportunity to get into the patient’s psyche and find a way to communicate with them, and when you can make a positive change, it’s gratifying.

I’m on the GP committee for the Independent Doctors Federation, and we have been working hard to create a closer working relationship with NHS practices. As private GPs, it would be practical to be able to access our patient’s records automatically so we can deliver joined-up care. Certainly, with our Menopause Management service, I see our part as relieving the pressure on the NHS. Our NHS GP colleagues are overstretched, so our role is to devise a treatment programme and perform annual check-ups for our patients so that doesn’t fall upon their NHS GP.

Our USP is that we get stuff done. We are incredibly efficient, backed by a great team, and can offer a concierge-level service. But also delivering on promises is vital when someone is stressed about their health.

The beauty of general practice is that you’re learning something new with every patient, which fires my general thirst for knowledge. The day I lose my curiosity is the day I retire.

I also learn from my consultant colleagues all the time – our access to the best specialists in the UK means we’re always kept abreast of the latest developments.

Outside of work, sport is my medicine. I always keep active and love running, cycling, swimming, and playing golf. We’re lucky enough to live in London and make the most of all that it has to offer including the theatre, opera, and exhibitions. Never knowingly not busy – even away from work!
