Dr Fiona Payne at GP at London W1

Dr Fiona Payne

MBBS, DFFP, Dip IPM, Dip Occ Med

I’m Dr Fiona Payne, one of the partners of GP London W1. The most satisfying part of being in private general practice is the variety – I find people endlessly fascinating, and I am constantly learning something new from my patients every day.

I work as an appraiser and mentor in the NHS and for the Independent Doctors Foundation, and you see clearly how much the doctor’s state of mind can influence how the patient perceives their experience. Being a private GP means I have the time and space to dedicate to my patients and support them throughout their journey.

I find our Occupational Health work both fascinating and challenging as you must represent both the employer and employee and always remain unbiased. It’s also hugely satisfying when you overcome obstacles for people, as our working lives are important to us all, and that can be very fulfilling.

At GP at London W1, our strength lies in our joined-up approach. We have weekly meetings to discuss our work and support each other, and we all practice similarly. We are also a very happy practice.

I keep abreast of new developments by listening to podcasts while cooking or travelling to work. I also learn from my patients all the time, and I think it’s vital to have an open mind and be receptive to new ideas.

The recent advances in cancer screening are exciting. Screening is vital, but I believe there should always be a balance, as unnecessary investigations can lead to more anxiety.

For my own personal health and wellbeing, I take enjoyment from the simple things. Anything that means I can focus on life outside of work, so I am reinvigorated for my patients.
